Two top district administrators are among those placed on administrative leave by Albuquerque Public Schools in the wake of a state and federal investigation into former state Rep. Sheryl Williams Stapleton. Investigators are looking into whether Williams Stapleton, who has worked for the district since , was involved in money laundering, taking illegal kickbacks, racketeering and violations of state governmental and ethical codes related to her jobs as a public school employee and a state lawmaker.

The U. Williams Stapleton, who has denied any wrongdoing and is not facing any criminal charges, resigned from her seat in the state House of Representatives Friday. She was one of 12 employees the district placed on administrative leave last week. Abigail Manzanares, a specialist in career and technical education, also was placed on administrative leave. Albuquerque Public Schools will welcome back all students who want in-person learning on April 5.

Interim Superintendent Scott Elder said every school is preparing to open its doors to allow students to learn on campus five days a week for the first time in what will be over a year due to the pandemic. The plan follows a major announcement from the New Mexico Public Education Department earlier this week that all schools are expected to return to full in-person learning by that early April date.

The plan outlined on Friday in a special APS Board of Education meeting translates to 37 instructional days at school. Board members did not vote on it. Being on campus during a pandemic will inherently look different. Mask-wearing will be required and social distancing will be expected. And lunches are recommended to be outside as much as possible.

Meals will still be provided for students learning remotely but pickup locations will likely be moved from schools to other locations. Students learning at school will have to bring their laptops or tablets to class every day as some work will still be online.

Getting enough bus drivers remains an issue for APS; families who are able are encouraged to drive their kids.
