When do carnegie mellon classes start
This means that the first two weeks of classes for all students both graduate and undergraduate will be remote-only February , and in-person classes will begin on Monday, February 15, This change from our original plan discussed below is an added precaution as we begin the semester given the elevated prevalence of the virus in the Pittsburgh region.
October 09, Dear Members of the CMU Community: I am writing to follow up on my September 10 email announcing the Spring academic calendar, including the new February 1 start date, and to provide additional information about the calendars for the spring and summer semesters.
First, in addition to a delayed start date, all undergraduate and graduate courses will now be required to start the spring semester remotely for the first week of classes. As previously shared, the spring semester will include two additional break days in addition to the mid-semester break. These days will be on Tuesday, February 23, and Monday, April 5. Classes are still scheduled to being Feb. The new adjustment simply extends what was originally intended to be a week of remote instruction to now cover the first two weeks of the semester.
The move came as hospitalization rates for covid infection rates in Allegheny County fell to the lowest level since November and hospitalizations declined, dropping from on Jan. Even so, covid patients remained in intensive care units with 58 on ventilators. CMU, which conducted covid tests on returning students and those who were traveling as well random tests throughout the fall semester, announced last week that it is opening a new testing lab and will offer weekly tests to students, faculty and staff this semester at no cost.

The university is committed to prioritizing the on-campus experience for our students while continuing some of the successful innovative teaching methods designed over the last year. Academic leaders across the university are looking ahead to the fall and several semesters into the future to ensure stability and continuity for both teaching and learning.
Exact details of the fall course schedule are still being finalized. We are shifting registration to early summer to ensure we are providing the university community the chance to plan ahead as well as allowing for additional guidance from public health experts. Students can expect to hear soon about course registration and residential housing processes and deadlines. While keeping the safety and well-being of our community members in mind, university leaders are finalizing plans for a model of instruction that prioritizes in-person educational experiences; however, contingency plans will exist should we need to enact them.
We anticipate that the vast majority of students will return for an on-campus learning experience, but some options for remote courses will be offered for those who are still unable to join us in person.
